What is Glaucoma?

A class of eye disorders known as glaucoma harms the optic nerve, frequently as a result of elevated intraocular pressure. It can develop gradually over time without causing any symptoms and is one of the main causes of permanent blindness in the world.

What causes Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often resulting from increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure). This damage can lead to vision loss if not treated promptly.

What are the common symptoms of Glaucoma?

The symptoms of glaucoma can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. In its early stages, many forms of glaucoma have no symptoms, which is why it is often called the “silent thief of sight.”

Open-Angle Glaucom

This form progresses slowly and often has no noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred. Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision, often in both eyes. Tunnel vision in advanced stages.

Normal-Tension Glaucoma

Gradual vision loss, particularly in peripheral vision, despite normal eye pressure. Often asymptomatic until advanced stages.

Secondary Glaucoma

Caused by an underlying condition, trauma, or medication. Symptoms may include: Eye pain or discomfort. Blurred or cloudy vision. Redness in the affected eye. Increased sensitivity to light.

Congenital Glaucoma

Cloudy or hazy cornea. Excessive tearing. Sensitivity to light (photophobia). Enlarged eyes or noticeable changes in the size of one or both eyes.
